IPOH MARKET STREET @ AVENUE K

Whenever the craving comes kicking in for local delights from Northern Malaysia, we would actually have a day trip to either Ipoh or Taiping during the weekend, just to fix the hankering temporarily. While it may not sound feasible during the weekdays, that’s when local eateries serving such food in Klang Valley comes inviting, such as this Ipoh Market Street, which is easily accessible from any public transport or self-drive due to its strategic location which is just across Suria KLCC.

A zesty green interior instantly greets you the moment you stepped into the premises, ultimately serving the best culinary heritage from Ipoh. And immediately chicken rice and pulpy bean sprouts come into mind at just the mere mention of it. Retrospectively, this place has more to offer it seems other than just these 2 iconic delicacies, namely the famous Ipoh Yong Tau Foo, Ipoh Bean Sprouts, Chicken Rice, Ipoh Noodle Soup and many more. Not forgetting those homey desserts such as Red Bean Ice, Sweet Corn Drinks and Fu Chuk Barley, which coloured most of our childhood times- those of Generation X and Y will surely fathom it (=

Among the Ipoh house recipes that we got to sample the other day was nothing short of delectably pleasing.

MARKET STREET ROAST PORK RICE (MYR12.90)
One of my personal highlight of the day- brilliantly roasted slab of tender meat done till the perfect crackling sensation on the skin. One bite will get you hooked for more rounds, believe me (=

MARKET STREET CHICKEN RICE (MYR 12.90)
For those more health conscious on a cleaner diet, voila!
Juicily steamed white chicken ultimately served the traditional way with hot rice and tangy sauces- chopped chili and minced ginger!

NASI LEMAK WITH RENDANG CHICKEN (MYR 13.90)
Wanna spice up Malaysian’s daily staple? Then this flavourful spiced chicken with homestyle relish would definitely do the trick, besides the usual fixed condiments such as anchovies, cucumber, groundnuts and others. The gravy was aromatic and not too spicy.

MARKET STREET PRAWN NOODLES (MYR 11.90)
Slurpy noodles come in a flavourful seafood broth with choice of your toppings such as fried garlic, shrimps, eggs, kangkung and fried fish cake. Reminds me of Penang’s style Hokkien Mee (=

MARKET STREET CURRY MEE (MYR 11.90)
One of Ipoh iconic delicacy- curry noodles! Each bowl is toothsomely added with sliced chicken breast, crispy roasted meat, besides its other sides like long beans and bean sprout to add on the crunch, all in a decent broth that is not too oily.

MARKET STREET DRY CURRY MEE (MYR 11.90)
If you like the less soupy version, then this bowl of dry noodle with curry gravy might be a good option. It allows those of you who enjoy stronger flavor in food as well as the more prominent curry fragrance. Anyway, personally I still prefer the soupy bowl for a clearer palate (=

RICE NOODLE ROLL WITH CURRY PORK SKIN (MYR 6.90)
Kids- friendly chee cheong fun dish that easily makes a great grub. Comes drenched in light curry sauce with slices of pork skin and some sesame to spice it up further.

MARKET STREET SQUID BALL (MYR 3.50)
This is one light snack that I really enjoy amidst the heavy feast, haha. It’s bouncy and flavourful, makes many happy and hassle-free bites.
For those looking for some light snack during afternoon tea time, these few nosh will fix the bill.

MARKET STREET KAYA BUTTER TOAST (MYR 4.90)
Local toastie with kaya and butter.

IPOH WHITE COFFEE (MYR 3.50)
Smooth and silky, not too sweet with pleasing aroma.

MARKET STREET SOFT BOILED EGG ON TOAST (MYR 4.90)
Just like how we love to enjoy this nostalgic dish with our old folks; wobbly half-boiled eggs served atop the crispy toast before some sprinkles of pepper and salt for light seasoning, yum yum!

IPOH KAYA PUFF (MYR7.50- 6PCS | MYR4.20- 3PCS| MYR1.50- 1PC)
Just as I thought it would be another common flour Oriental pastries, this golden kaya puff seems to pull through pretty well with its freshly baked flaky skin. Unlike those I had previously which appear rather solid and bit doughy. Good one!

IPOH BERCHAM TAU FU FAH (MYR 3.50)
Silky and velvet bean curd dessert with options to go with brown sugar syrup or white sugar syrup.

IPOH PULUT KAYA (MYR 5.90)
One of the famous heritage- beautiful Nyonya Kuih  served with rich kaya or shredded coconut.  The colour is safe for comsumption as it is sourced naturally from the graceful blue pea flowers.

MARKET STREET SWEET POTATO DESSERT (MYR 3.50)
Warm bowl of homey sweet potato, served in ginger soup.

WAN TOU LONG JELLY ICE 晕头狼 (MYR 4.90)
Refreshing kind of specialty dessert where the shaved ice is topped with silky jelly, sour plum and lime for added extra zest!

IPOH CARAMEL CUSTARD EGG (MYR 4.80)
Sweet custard coated with caramel sauce. I think I’ll enjoy it more it is less sweet, hehe.

MARKET STREET FRUIT ROJAK (MYR 8.50)
Malaysia style of mixed fruit platter, where assorted cut fruits are drizzled with prawn paste or more commonly known as ‘rojak sauce’, accompanied with crispy fried fritters to jazz it up.

In a nutshell, the Ipoh feast was certainly a delightful one with everyone leaving the yummy house with a happy tummy. I might not be a huge fan of heavy curry gravy with decent chili oil, but I must agree that the roasted meat here is tastefully prepared just nice, each cuts comes in good fatty layers and lean meat proportion, roasted just nice and not too dry, most importantly, the crackling crispy skin on the outside is not neglected! And that sums up a marvelous afternoon of local gastronomy rediscovery.
