MAMA SAN @ SURIA KLCC

A quick glance at the brand name might trick you into thinking that it could be some sort of Japanese restaurant. But lo and behold, you would be surprised that Mama San actually serves up a tempting array of local cuisines (pork-free) infused with unique rendition in each of them- both decadent and elegant.

Reflecting cultural diversity, Mama San offers hearty South East Asian dishes that are prepared ala minute upon order and plated contemporarily for both the palate and visual delectation. Every desire and taste bud is thoughtfully considered before presented in both sharing plates as well as single serving; be it traditional Asian flavours and European classics for the fusion enthusiasts.
Talking about Malaysian favourites, you just can’t run away from carbs. After all, we do need carbohydrate and it is part of the essential diet as well. So it all boils down to moderation.
Thence, let’s not worry too much and indulge in the assorted varieties of tempting heritage recipes.

We kicked off our feast that evening whimsically with alluring starters, sumptuous mains to sinful desserts and promising house-special beverages including cocktails, mocktails, coffee and many more.
Pamelo Salad with Shallot Coconut & Roasted Chili Paste (MYR 35)
This unique salad has indeed since changed my perspective on the versatility of pamelo. It never crossed my mind that the usually sweet and juicy pulps can elegantly blend in so well with savory local condiments. Every bites of this appetizer is full of robust flavours with hint of light smokiness.
Crispy Sotong with Chili Jam (MYR 37)
For a person who often shuns away from thick batter fritters, this nosh able to keep me intrigued (at least several helpings), thanks to its light and crispy texture paired with dainty house special chili jam which was lovely to my taste bud. I also love the idea where julienned ginger flower and deep-fried curry leaves were added to this snack as they helped to inject subtle fragrance- which sounds complex but pleasant to taste still.
Butter Prawn Cooked with Egg Yolk Chili & Curry Leaf (MYR 68)
Skillfully whipped up dish commonly seen in Chinese culinary where golden eggy net is served alongside with fresh and juicy sea prawns.
Sichuan Braised Eggplant with Capsicum Ginger & Dark Soy (MYR 28)
Another dish drawing some history from Oriental elements but delivered with a friendlier twist as it was less spicy, despite the fact that Sichuan folks always have a knack for hot and spicy food with strong flavour. Ironically, my palate was convinced by Mama San’s interpretation.
Sweet & Sour Crispy Whole Fish with Ginger Flower and Chili (MYR 95)
Fish lovers especially pescatarian would find themselve delighted over this sweet and sour savouring that goes really well with a bowl of warm rice. For extra zest, you may further squeeze some lime juice to heighten up the overall enjoyment. It’s truly appetizing and not too spicy.

“Dendeng Balado” Beef with Kaffir Lime Chili & Lemon Basil (MYR 67)

Another highlight would be this long hour braised beef cutlet. They were so tender and succulent, whereby each bite of the meat was very well and evenly marinated with intense flavour from the spice. I guess the picture does not do justice to this dark-coloured spiced meat, but trust me- it was really good and thou should not miss ordering this whenever patronizing Mama San.
Butter Chicken Cooked In Tomato Cashew Nut & Kasoori (MYR 47)

Comes with garlic naan, this Indian recipes has been given a new breath with much more tantalizing tinge, in which the orangey gravy had been specially calibrated inhouse with Kasoori Methi for that exceptional degustation, distinguishing itself from its peers. The fact that this version is much lighter and not overly cloying, hence even with just the aromatic garlicky bread and the saporous sauce only, it was already a very satisfying collation for me.
Lontong Special with Prawn & Serunding (MYR 36)
Ultra rich in flavour dish, this classic Lontong is authentically cooked with coconut milk, “sayur lodeh” and served with nasi impit (rice cubes), prawns, hard-boiled egg and special peanut sauce sambal.

Thanks to its heavier Indonesian influence, the gravy is much creamier than the usual Lontong you have in Klang Valley but nonetheless, it is still very much rich in flavour. I personally prefer such thicker consistency.
Dessert lovers, remember to head over to their famous Long Cake Bar for sweet tooth fix.
Durian Crepe Cake (MYR 18)
Needless to say more, any Musang King lovers would be enchanted by this full-bodied and rich flavour by the crowning King of Fruits. And it would always be case of acquired taste to those who don’t enjoy this pungent fruit- but it is truly yummy!!
Cekodok Pisang (MYR 12)
A much delicate bites compared to the rest- deep fried round banana nuggets that is filled with the fruit sweetness itself; crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside.
Aside from being a fuss-free snack, they are also cutesy simultaneously. A more rustic but healthier version of the current frenzy boba pearls? Just my two cents (=

Ultimately Malaysian favourite ol’ fashioned tea time!
All-Day Dining from Breakfast to Tea is available; same goes for Cocktails to Supper goers.
As for carefree sundowner, why not unwind the day with Mama San signature drinks with a spectacular night view of Lake Symphony Dancing Fountains after a fruitful retail therapy?
Latte (MYR 14)
Smooth and creamy cuppa to wrap up the feasty night the Continental way……
The Tarik (MYR 14)
Nicely frothed Malaysian favourite breakfast drink (or anytime of the day). I agree that the barista who prepared this drink must be skillful to create such steady microfoam.
Strawberry Smash (MYR 23)
A bubbly and sweet thirst quencher!
Mama San Coconut Mojito (MYR23)
Perfect for some chillax sip of the virgin mojito- much ethereal than pina colada.
And now there you go for those tippler buffs, cheers!
 Lychee Tiffin Punch (MYR 26)
Gin Passion Mule (MYR 26)
Espresso Ginger Martini (MYR 31)
As sceptical as it may sound, but they pull it off aesthetically overall. With the dulcet companion of a black chocolate truffle- that’s a bonus!

Whether you’re in the mood to feast or graze, Mama San has just the right appealing offering- just for you!
