The much-awaited inaugural KL Big Kitchen Festival
2015 is finally commencing with a Grand Launch and a
special media preview on the opening day of the festival, Friday 29th May
2015.
The much
anticipated event kicked off with a grand launch at the Big Kitchen marquee at
Kuala Lumpur’s most historic and distinctive site, Dataran Merdeka yesterday. The Grand Launch was officiated by HRH the Queen of Malaysia, Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri
Agong, Tuanku Sultanah Hajjah Haminah Hamidun.
Dubbed
as the biggest food festival and creating an important milestone for Kuala Lumpur,
the 3-day event is proudly presented by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in
partnership with the Ministry of Tourism & Culture.
Also
in attendance at the Grand Launch was the Minister of Federal Territory, YB
Datuk Seri Utama Tengku Adnan bin Tengku Mansor, Deputy Minister of Federal Territory
YB Dato Dr Loga Bala Mohan Jaganathan, Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism
& Culture Malaysia, YBhg. Dato Ong Hong Peng, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, YBhg.
Datuk Seri Hj Ahmad Phesal bin Hj Talib, Ambassadors, Dignitaries, government agencies,
the festival partners and sponsors plus over 100 local and international media.
Over
this weekend, the KL Big Kitchen Festival 2015 will boast 20
international and local chefs cooking 119 recipes and on the Padang, there will
be 8 food Villages serving over 200 types of food prepared by over 10 vendors.
The 8 Food Villages include Negeri
presenting dishes from 13 states, Warisan representing Malaysia heritage
cuisine, Manisan showcasing a delectable range of desserts, Dulang will bring
one back to the traditional experience of communal dining, Warung features
handpicked “warungs” that offers KL’s bet street food, Samplings presents
sampling of fine dining cuisines, Food Trucks and Mayor’s Courtyard will offer
and intimate culinary experience.
During the special media preview, we get a chance to
meet-and-greet all the participating chefs, experience an exclusive chefs’
cook-out session and taken on a tour of the Big Kitchen and overall festival
site.
Invitees and media guests were invited
to sample sumptuous high tea in a splendor enclave.

Enlivening the evening further were
cooking demonstration by Chef Christian
Mittermeier (Member of the Jeune Restauranteurs d’ Europe Assocition)
and Dato’ Chef Ismail Ahmad
(Celebrity Chef and Owner of Restoran Rebung Chef Ismail) along with Celebrity Chef Florence Tan.
The session started off with 2 dishes cooked sous vide, led by virtuoso
Chef Mittermeier.

Subsequently Chef Ismail and Chef
Florence Tan spiced up the night further with their adept local cuisines,
Kerabu Sepat and Four Angle Beans, coupled with lively chemistry of both genial
mavens, cheering up the crowd effortlessly.
The 3-day prestigious food festival from
29th till 31st
May, is primarily to boost and promote over 20 international and local chefs
who will showcase their culinary skills and prowess, and brand of cuisine to
the local and international foodies.
Curated by incidentally KL’s Food
Ambassador Chef Norman Musa, the line-up includes Michelin star Chef Christian Mittermeier
from Germany, Chef Andrew Nutter and
Chef Claire Ptak from UK, Chef Will Meyrick from Indonesia and Chef Cyril
Rouquet from France.
Local chefs include Datuk Chef Wan
Ismail, Dato’ Chef Ismail Ahmad, Chef Florence Tan, Chef Jochen Kern, Chef
Malcom Goh, Chef Firdaus Hanan, Chef Dr Ezani, Chef Izyan Hani, Chef Anis
Nabila, Chef Darren Chin and Chef Kamarul. Adding to the line-up are Malaysian
born chefs who have made a mark overseas, Chef Adu Amran and Chef Isadora Chai.
In addition to meeting your favourite
chefs, visitors will get a chance to meet another very special Royal guest at the
festival, Her Royal Highness (HRH) Tengku Puan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah
Maimunah Iskandariah.
The Minister of Federal Territory thanked all the celebrity chefs
especially those who travelled many hours just to cook in KL and the three
esteemed food speakers. He applauded the efforts and initiatives of the Mayor
of Kuala Lumpur and his dedicated team members who worked hard to position KL
as a city to be reckoned with. The festival is the best effort bringing
together upcoming and renowned chefs to show their culinary skills and brand of
cuisine to local and foreign epicurean, as much as it is an exciting and intimate way to get to know and
experience local flavours.
He also hopes to see long lasting support from all parties to promote
KL and bring in the influx of tourists to show KL in its true potential.
