ROCKCLIFFE WINERY @ DENMARK WA

Now this has got to be one of the most exciting part of the WA escapade this year as this is my maiden visit to any winery, other than merely enjoying those tipples occasionally back in home country then, hehe.

After all this while only exchanging camaraderie virtually despite we used to stay in the same locality back in Kuala Lumpur, finally get to meet up in person and saying Hi to each other for real! Haha…

This affable amigo is one true-blue passionate wine connoisseur who owns the splendid Rockcliffe vineyard tranquilly located in the peaceful town of Denmark in West Australia.

Being a tea lover too himself specifically English Breakfast, Steve is currently helming Rockcliffe business and is the main mastermind behind the vino business which requires him to be on the go most of the time meeting up with his clienteles and business partners near and afar. You might see him in Dubai one day and the next day greeting you bonjour from France. Even so, he’s always that energetic and full of zest! That really amazes me and I keep wondering how he manage to cope with such hectic schedule- not mentioning his sleek figure which is still as fit as fiddle despite having to always running around the globe (clock). Drink more wine perhaps? (=

Brief History on Rockcliffe Winery

The origin of Rockcliffe was an 18 acre expanse of apple orchards planted early in the 1900’s in the rich Scotsdale Valley region of Denmark in the Great Southern, Western Australia. In the late 1980’s, a local family acquired the property for its fertile soils and position for long afternoon sunshine with cool ocean breezes. It was christened Matilda’s Meadow and the planting of dry grown vines commenced. The Pinot and Chardonnay vines were the first planted in the district in 1987.

The brand reflects its love of the Ocean and how important it is to the vineyard. Located less than 15km from the Southern Ocean, the farm is gifted with sea breezes all summer to cool the vineyard, creating the perfect conditions for the slow ripening, cool climate styles that symbolize the Great Southern.

We were lucky that able to steal some time from Steve that morning to have him walked and guided us around his baby- the winery and the production factory. Being a greenhorn in this profession, I can’t help to keep uuhh-ahhh, astonished by the various massive machineries and the complexity involved in the wine production as we toured around the fermentation section. Every nook and corner of the surrounding really drew my curiosity to sum it up.

Time really flies when you’re having that 1001 questions running through your mind as you come across your aesthetic yen that somehow keeps you inquisitive all the time but you know that those knowledge is not garnered in a jiffy. As the adage goes, “Rome is not built in a day”. Guess I really need to head back to the basic, revisit the bookworm hobby again or Google-worm in the context of the world today :D

After a quick drive about 5 minutes away, we returned to the cozy cottage of Steve that was directly facing the beautiful vinery and juxtaposed to Gin Lao, that also provided us as a reposeful respite the night before. Suddenly my body felt tad heavy and find it hard to leave the comfy autumn bed, haha. Thanks so much again Steve!

Before really bidding goodbye to Steve and the serene Denmark town, we went to Steve’s favourite coffeehouse at Mrs Jones Café for some hearty grubs prior en route to Pemberton. So stay tuned for the next post!
