PONY TALE DE CAFÉ @ SPICE ARENA, PENANG
Only one word to describe our newly
found culinary oasis in the already well-known food haven state itself-
TERRIFIC! Read on.
An adorable, slightly cheekily named
café- Pony Tale de Café,
that is not only endearingly
appealing, but also tastefully convincing. Before the mains were even served,
my partner in crime and I had already been tremendously mesmerized by its
myriad selection of so creative yet healthy beverages that surely gonna blow
your mind absolutely. The idea behind it revolves around creative fusion twist
that is plainly brilliant and out of the box. You just can't guess what have been added inside until they reveal to you! Hehe....
Pony Tale de Café first greeted the public officially on 28th Dec 2015, welcoming patrons to a cozy
respite set within a warm ambiance added with some vintage touch to its overall
establishment. It’s located strategically at the new sports arena of Penang,
SPICE, that is easily accessible for some hearty grubs especially after
swimming at the adjacent stadium. The SPICE Arena was previously
known as the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA), an indoor arena located
in Penang, Malaysia.
The team behind Pony Tale de Café is really serious about dishing up
sumptuous plates of
European Asian cuisine hot from the kitchen using
the freshest ingredients that they could source, especially the bounteous
seafood supply that are ensured of its optimum quality. One of the founder of
this eating house is also a proprietor of an established seafood supply chain
of the region, hence guests are assured of the top-notch seafood indulgence
here.
To get it started, what about a bowl
of saporous soup and a plate of oceanic salad as starter first?
TOMATO
COULIS WITH SEAFOOD SOUP OF SCALLOP BASE
A rich and flavourful broth from the boiling of
assorted seafood stock which includes scallop, mussels, prawns and many more, rendering
a very intense seafood taste in every scoops. The tomato coulis on the other
side helps to inject more savory sweetness to the soup, hence making it a very
appetizing first course to start with apart from the common crudites serving.
For green lovers who are conscious on their
waistline, they would be thrilled to find that the salad is no longer a boring
affair over here at Pony Tale de Café .
SEAFOOD
FATTOUSH SALAD WITH FLAXSEED, SESAME SEED AND CRANBERRY
Juicy mussels and huge sea prawns are carefully laid
atop crisp greens before liberally drizzled with house fruity relish that
includes the toothsome dressing of various healthy seeds- flaxseed and sesame
seed, which go really well together with the citrusy and sweetness from the
cranberries. I really love the special condiments as the seeds really add another
dimension to the overall nuance, thumbs up!
CHICKEN
BAHARAT WITH HARISSA POTATO
Generous slab of thoroughly marinated tender chicken
thigh served on a bed of nicely wilted spinach, served alongside juicy Shitake
mushroom and accompanied by uniquely spiced harissa
herbs in the potato wedges, wow! It might come a little bit tangy and
spicy, as the main ingredients are hot chili paper paste! Now you know it, but I
didn’t recall any gochujang (Korean chili paste) that hot either, hehe.
Definitely something new to tickle our ever adventurous taste buds! (=
Here comes the dish for the fish lovers like me =)
SEABASS
WITH PEPPERTONATO
The thickly cut fillet is surely a treat to have.
Pan fried till slightly crispy on the skin while locking all the juices within
the bouncy meat, and then delicately served over capers, sweet basil, black
pepper, bell peppers as well as some lemon slice for extra zest! Sometimes,
food is well kept simple at its best for its freshness would showcase that
underlying attribute. Oh ya, don’t forget the equally inviting scoops of gratin
potato served on the side too! Cheesy and buttery, just plain delectable!
SPAGHETTI
PESTO TORE
Springy pasta done al dente and deliciously tossed in
tomato coulis base, together with bouncy prawns, mozzarella, dry basil and
fresh basil. I like the fact that the pasta is not overly drenched in the
sauce, which befits a the definition of a well-prepared Italian staple.
Although the appetizing presentation
somehow reminds me of Chuck Hughes’s Black Cod Fish Ratatouille en Papillote,
this dish is just outstanding as it is, bravo!
And last but not least, the awesome CHEESY OMELETTE!
A frills-free yet
bursting in flavours chuck that is suffice to spice up your day. This bubbly
moist omelette is beaten together with the eggs, meat cutlets, crisp bell
peppers, salt and pepper in a bowl cooked over skillet at medium-high heat before
the wobbly and cheesy bites are ready to
be served.
While the array of repast is scrumptiously crafted by the affable maestro, Chef Hafiz, now let’s usher out the most deserving and noteworthy beverages of the town, passionately concocted by the adept hands of whom we gladly touted as “The Maven of Inventive Drinks”, Gerald! She’s a very knowledgeable barista and also a friendly soul to have, exuding warmness throughout the surrounding. Voila, have a quick run-down, shall we? Am so exciting all over again, hehe............
Here come the drinks that we have raved about it earlier on! Not only they are visually appealing, but also very, very much an eye-opener! Now who says mocktails couldn’t rub shoulder with cocktails then? After trying them out, you might want to change that stigma again, hehe. Basically, there are divided into few categories, thematic ones that goes by the 4 seasons, flower-tea infused drinks, chocolates and surely not to be missed, your caffeine fix too.

signature recipe of milk ice blended with some fruits and adding in our home brewed osmanthus essence, a pretty yet elegant drink for both man and woman.
CHOCOCADO ESPRESSO
Avocado,
chocolate and espresso.
The suggested method
of drinking will be three layer drinking technique- First will be taking a sip
of the avocado, Secondly will be mixing the chocolate around the glass to get
the second taste and thirdly will be adding the espresso to the rest of the
drinks and enjoy.
MOO ON THE ROCKS
Special
signature recipe of ice blended milk with some fruits. then a drop of frozen
espresso cube into it. Relish in every sip of thee moo on the rocks by the subtle taste of coffee that changes from
the beginning till the end, as the espresso cube melts and blends into the milk
throughout the course. Ah, now that this revives back my yet another
pleasurable coffee discovery of Espresso Bomb from Jeq In The House.
DARK BELGIUM HOT CHOC
70% dark
choc coins will be melted in a hot milk before served.
For coffee-based beverages, Pony Tale de
Café is using Medan robusta blend for the unmistakable nutty and chocolaty flavor, whereas Indonesian Mandheling for its
single origin cup of joe that hits the tongue with an immediate aroma but entails
with a smooth finish of tanine.
