Gangnam 88 @ Solaris Mont' Kiara
As the
weekend mood has it, we decided to brave the traffic to Mont Kiara from Golden
Triangle after some late night at office. Guess Lady Luck is at our side and we
are thankful for the smooth journey, before we reached our yummy place that is
totally full house indeed!
Gangnam 88
makes its presence somewhere end of 2012 and has since sparked tremendous
interest among the Korean foodies. It is always that jam-packed whenever
patronizing by. Upon entering the door, we are greeted amiably by one young
Korean chap-believed to be one of the crew. After some 10 minutes waiting,
finally we got our sitting in a quaint corner with top ceiling wall being
decorated with built-in book shelves. Unique and space-friendly indeed.
After
flipping through the menu hungrily, we decided to make it a Kimchi-themed
night! And so we ended up with Kimchi Jigae, Kimchi Jeon and inhouse best
seller, Beer Chicken! While anticipating curiously, we help ourselves with the
delish array of ban chan. Overall, all of the side dishes are scrumptious with
stir-fried watercress being our favourite! In this case, the usual spinach is
being replaced with this leafy green which is tangier and is then cooked with
some sesame oil and also dashes of white sesame. Not forgetting the authentic
Kimchi that is also crisp amidst its piquancy.
Kimchi Jigae
This is the
first dish to greet us on the table, together with the rest of the delectable
ban chan. A simple and wholesome soup that comes with several ingredients like
bean curd, onions, pork stripes, spring onions, lots chillies but not spicy,
and not forgetting Kimchi itself. It is actually not very spicy but rather
appetizing, so those foodies with butter tongue should be able to handle it :)
In order to
keep it warm, the thoughtful crew lighted up this whitish coal which could be
easily mistaken for rock salt! :P
Kimchi Jeon
Coming up
next is the staple snack of our Korean chingu. Korean pancake. This pajeon
really comes with lots of Kimchi and we enjoy every bites of munching on the
crisp preserved cabbage. It is nicely pan-fried and not too oily either.
Masshisoyo!
Beer Chicken
Eventually,
the long-awaited fare arrived! This Beer Chicken is definitely one of its kinds
to have been grilled with Tiger beer for about 45 minutes. No wonder there is a
time gap with the other dishes, so best make a prior reservation before coming.
As stunningly as this grilled fowl arrives with lots of Gangnam flags embedded,
it is also nice to have the crew to help us debone the chicken for the ease of
consuming it later on. Kamsahamnida oppa!
The meat is
deliciously grilled, with the juiciness of the chicken breast still intact. You
get to whet your palate with some subtle water vapour of beer in the oven dish
and there is also some light crispiness on the skin too. This dish also comes
with big and juicy bean sprouts as well as some special dipping like
salt-pepper with mustard. I do think the yellow sauce is a bit unexpected but
soon figure out how to best enjoy it. The idea is to pair some chicken meat
with the sprouts, then doused some mustard on it to savour satisfactorily.
Else, you could just lightly dab the meat on the salt and pepper which is
equivalently tasty too.
Surprisingly, no one on the table would want to have those drumsticks! Peculiar but was indeed happy go lucky! Needless to say, the two bones of tender meat wholly belongs to me then, hahaha....
In a
nutshell, Gangnam 88 fits the idea of a cosy and casual place for hang outs and
catch up with your buddies, together enjoying the a sumptuous array of Korean
food. Thumbs up!
