LWIN LEE | NYONYA & IPOH HERITAGE @ HOUZ WARMING CAFE
For the past 2 months,
Houz Warming Café have been whetting the palate of folks in the neighbourhood of
Bandar Puteri Puchong with earnest food of Nyonya and Ipoh flairs. Thanks to
the amiable owner; Ervin and Celine who both hails from Ipoh and Malacca
respectively, for bringing this homey dishes to the central metropolis, so that
foodie alike could enjoy conveniently.
Environment is airy and comfortable with spacious pinkish surrounding.
Recipes are
authentically served here where all condiments, spices and sauces are freshly made
inhouse through some long hours conscientious cooking. Among the comfort plates
to tantalize your tastebuds are………….
PORK NOODLE SOUP (MYR
6.90)
A very simple but
heart-warming bowl of soup, cooked with vegetable, pork meat, livers in the
stock of pork bone, that renders a clear and sweet soup, that could easily be enjoyed individually as a
soup. It is a famous serving back in Ipoh with history dated as far as 30 years
ago. You could choose to have it with vermicelli, noodles or even “hor fun”.
PRAWN MEE (MYR 8.90)
Somewhat different from
the widely known prawn noodle, the pork slices are thickly cut and only add in
freshly to the boiling curry soup upon order, resulting in a chewier texture. The soup base has also been sweetened by thorough boiling of prawn shells.
Lunch set which
includes a drink with MYR 1 add on;
HOUSE SPECIAL SAMBAL
FRIED FISH with RICE (MYR 10.90)
Hardtail scad or more
locally known as “cencaru” fish, is fried beforehand and then flavoured up with
the flavouful paste of sambal. Unlike the conventional stuffed chilli fish,
this rendition by Houz Warming is moister and friendlier to those who have less
tolerance on spicy food but yet, remains delicious.
ASAM BANDUNG SEAFOOD with
RICE (MYR 10.90)
Fragrantly stir-fried in coconut milk-enriched tangy sauce with oceanic wonders such as fish, prawns and squids, alongside
with diced onions and tomatoes cubes, makes it a very appetizing dish to be
best paired with a plate of white rice. One of the recommended spiced platter
(=
Coming up next is also
another favourite pick.
PATONG CHICKEN CHOP with
RICE (MYR13.90)
An interesting and unique twist of the ubiquitous chicken chop. This western recipe has been creatively incorporated with Asian elements by infusing it with spiced gravy that goes really well with the tender meat.
But being an ardent fan
of cheese, couldn't let this slip out from my list too;
CHEESE BUTTER MILK CHICKEN
CHOP with RICE (MYR13.90)
Crispy chicken fillet that has been deboned, is then taken into a deep fried tour before smothered with addictive cheese relish that is made of Gouda Cheese that lend some sort of a sweet and fruity tinge to the overall taste. It could be tad milky but nevertheless, scrumptiously enticing.
HAKKA
VINEGAR PORK with RICE (MYR 9.90)
Contrary to the common pork knuckle in black vinegar that we have, this recipe of Hakka clan uses white vinegar instead, and together with radish are thoroughly slow-boiled for some good 6 hours to unveil the natural sweetness in it. It still has the similar zestiness but less piquant than the former.
As
for the day’s special, we get to sample the crowd’s favourate treasure pot.
ASAM NANAS PRAWNS with RICE and HONEY JASMINE (MYR
13.90)
Served piping hot in a delish seafood selection of huge
prawns, squid, fish and vegetables to make up a balanced diet. It is dishes up
according Nyonya original recipes where salted fish is added to it to give it a
natural oceanic saltiness, together with pineapple rings to inject some
pleasant tartness to it.
And this daily’s special set also comes with a
complimentary drink too. Otherwise, you could opt for other herbal tea, honey jasmine or barley
ala carte anytime.
All the dishes are
cooked with genuine passions that somehow do stir up some nostalgic taste from
home sweet home. Houz Warming Cafe has indeed warmed the cockles of
those seeking for decent homecooked food.
