LWIN LEE | TORIDOKI 鶏鬨 @ DESA SRI HARTAMAS

Malaysia has KFC, Korea has its famous KyoChon, and now joining the bandwagon of chicken culinary specialist is none other than TORIDOKI 鶏鬨, a Yakitori restaurant from Tokyo which has just introduced its first overseas branch at my favourite neighbourhood of Desa Dri Hartamas just 4 months ago.

This Japanese restaurant specialized in Yakitori(chicken skewers) that are freshly made from bite-sized pieces of meat from all different parts of chickens, such as chicken breast, thigh, skin, liver and other innards. In order to preserve the authenticity of this Japanese fare, Toridoki pays close attention to fine details and they uses only the  chicken meats that have been pre-selected by their Japanese chef, so to ensure similar quality as served back in Japan is achieved here too.

Warm and cozy interior that resembles the many common ambiance as seen in most izakaya(Japanese-style pubs), especially within the suburban old town.

A quick glance of the menu has us seen several bubbled up numbers, which basically is a numbering that makes the diners' life easier by stating upfront which part of the chicken meat is used in the Yakitori dishes. So we could expect what is delivered to us is fresh from the kitchen of Toridoki.

We started off with some toothsome appetizer of the day before proceed with much anticipation for their signature yakitori!

OTOSHI
Yasai shiraae- appetizer of-the-day served complimentary .

KONSAI SALAD (MYR 18)
This colorful salad bowl of assorted root’s vegetable strikes my attention the most. Not only the vibrant vegetable combinations are assuring to the eyes, it’s also very nutritional with all the essential nutrient intake such as the pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, lotus root, broccoli, potatoes and many more, with light drizzle of Caesar dressing.

To spice it up further, fresh cheese block is grated atop the bowl upon serving with just the right, dainty amount that results in a very pleasant enjoyment. Slurps!

NAGAIMO GARLIC BUTTER(MYR 12)
Another of my fave pick is this , nagaimo, Japanese yam that is lightly deep fried with skills, before dashed with  some garlic and butter. The flavourful nuance and taste is undeniably awesome and I could easily help myself with two portions of it (=

SUNAGIMO AHIJYO (MYR 18)
Interesting plate greeting us next is this special diced chicken gizzard that is cooked in olive oil along with 8 kinds of vegetables served in a hot plate accompanied by French loaf. The gizzard bites have a chewy texture that is delightful to the tastebud.

TEBA AGE (MYR 10)
The focus here must be their high quality Yakitori selections especially the grilled chicken wing which is my top pick here personally. Unlike other places, upon biting the tender chicken meat underneath the crispy but non-greasy layer of sesame sprinkles, the juice just burst out liberally! And for one second, I nearly thought it could be excessive oil BUT it is not! It’s purely the essence of the chicken juice itself from the sweetness as discerned by the palate! It’s just exceptionally OISHII !!!

The tastiness of the deep fried chicken wing here that is just marinated with shoyu, is absolutely top notch and simply irresistible!

MARUYAKI (MYR 45)
A promising dish the comes with the outstanding piece of grilled  whole chicken after 1 day of marinade with red wine and bamboo salt! So can you imagine the tastefully penetration of flavours throughout the meat? (=

Kuta Fusuya, the Manager of Toridoki, helping us with the right way of cutting and dishing out the recipes.

Diners would need to order it in advance, unless you don’t mind waiting if you walk-in, for it takes up to 45 minutes of grilling upon ordering in a special machine imported from Japan. The crispy on the  outside and juicy within maruyaki is then served with 3 types of relish namely rock salt, gara tare (Japanese spicy sauce) and ponzu(Japanese citron sauce with shoyu and lemon).

Here it comes, the much awaited Yakitoris!

TORIDOKI (MYR 8),  NEGIMA (MYR 5) and TSUKUNE (MYR 11)
The Toridoki which comes alternatingly skewered with chicken breast and thigh meat come exceptionally superb! The chicken breast part is especially well done! Never before have I tasted such moist and juicy breast meat that is also flavourful at the same time. With just very light seasoning of shio(salt), the snacks are already a delectable companion.

As for Negima, the chicken thigh cubes are grilled alongside with leek, whilst the Tsukune (meatball) comes rather moist and consists of various parts of the chicken meat with adequate marinade.

CHEESE YAKI ONIGIRI (MYR 12)
Your not-so-ubiquitous Japanese grilled rice  ball stuffed with tantalizing Camembert cheese in the inside. A rather unique way of enjoying this ‘westernized’ Japanese snack where the outer layer is made fragrant with the smoky grilling while remaing soft and slightly briny from the toppings on cheese powder as well as generous bonito flakes. Best eaten warm as that will secure the melting cheese moment as it oozes out alluringly.

HOUJICHA PUDDING (MYR 10)
Now this Japanese-infused pudding really warms the cockles of my heart. It’s common to see all sorts of pudding served nowadays which usually hovering around caramel base, but not for houjicha, which boast a very sensuous yet engaging roasted green tea taste.. The aroma is very subtle, less astringent and surprisingly blends in well with the slurpy milkiness. It’s velvety and certainly a must-have  refreshing dessert whenever dropping by.

Certainly its casual ambience is welcoming, especially for those looking to kick back with a beer or two while waiting for their skewers.

Hoppy (ホッピ)!

Hoppii is a beer-flavored, almost non-alcoholic drink with only 0.8% alcohol content. Taste wise I would akin it to the western beer albeit on a softer hint. Despite its beer-like flavor, Hoppy contains no purine bases and is a popular item at many Japanese bar. You could either have it Soto by itself, or make it a Hoppy Set.

HOPPY SET- WHITE (MYR 24)
NAKA (Japanese Distilled Liquour- MYR 11)
SOTO (Hoppy- MYR 13)

With Kuta-san,  乾杯 !

As the custom has it, Hoppy is often mixed with shōchū (a Japanese distilled beverage) and considered as a substitute for beer. Basically, the Hoppy comes in a bottle and shochu in a separate glass. As you enjoy the drink and indulge in the camaraderie of your companions, either one component might run out first, so you could then ask for additional ala-carte respectively for either Naka (Shochu) or Soto (Hoppy) to complement the whole drink again. Works best when drink cold =)

Hence the mixed drink is referred to as Hoppy as well. It is still a staple among some Tokyo residents, and have since experienced a retro revival of late.

The perfect timing of skewing the fresh meat over the charcoal at Tori Doki is almost like an art which needs the most proficient technique they must have cultivated over the years to deliver best Yakitoris to the customers in a best condition.  And of course, a glass of cold Japanese beer right next to the grilled chickens makes your foodie experience even more vividly memorable. Kanpai and ichiban!
