LWIN LEE | KAFE VIETNAM @ PUCHONG

A slight detour from my usual Western-European epicurean discovery, this round of foodie trip has added in another new  Pan-Asian cuisine chapter to my existing  gourmet encyclopedia.

Staying true to its heritage root, Kafe Vietnam has successfully thrived on its very own authentic Vietnamese recipes at the brisk town of Bandar Puteri Puchong that has delighted many palates so far.  Securing a corner shop lot that is very much visible to the public, this family-run café aims to provide an avenue where our local folks could experience the real and honest Vietnamese meal here without the hassle to fly all the way to the country itself. Most of the ingredients are largely sought from the country of origin too with a large influence from Saigon particularly.

Owned and managed by a lovely couple, Justin Chew and Dona Linh together with their team, the café welcomes you to a comfortable environment with ample space for you to venture around. There are displays of  Vietnamese products that is available for sale, which includes ready-to-drink coffee of various blends that includes civet coffee as well, together with some home-made spice too.

Dining at any Vietnamese eateries means that the dishes can’t go without those quintessential servings such as Vietnamese spring rolls, soupy vermicelli, savory fish cake and et cetera.

But before that, let’s get some sip of the famous aromatic Vietnamese coffee!

NUOC GIAI KHAT - Special Vietnam Coffee (MYR  6.90)
A really milky and velvet blend of coffee with a definite composition of 45% of highland (Dalat) and lowland (border of Vietnam and Cambodia) respectively in addition to 10% civet coffee.  Love the aroma and slightly more chocolaty than its Western peers.

There are also other salubrious blended beverages that includes ciku, soursop, strawberries, lemongrass, tea, juices and etc.

And dessert is never too early for me, haha……….

CHE BA MAU (RM7.90)
A dessert with jelly and beans, signatures back in Vietnam.

Among the exemplary plates to kick start the day was the rice spring roll; an epitome staple for this region.

THAP CAM CUON (THIT NUONG, NEM NUONG, CHAO TOM VA CHA GIO)- DELUXE MIXED PLATTER  (MYR 31.90)

This is one of my favourite appetizers whenever comes to savoring Vietnamese food. Fresh leafy greens namely fragrant Thai Basil accompanied with herbs, vermicelli, julienned cucumber, bean sprouts and minced meat of your choice like BBQ pork meat, Vietnamese pancake or sugar cane prawn cake, to DIY your very own customized rice roll. Am always intrigued by the intricacy in making the paper-thin rice roll that is akin to a transparent wrap, that is light and just nice to make a healthy roll. Then enjoy it with a tasteful dipping of the signature fish sauce. I have always love the fish sauce over soya sauce for it gives the dishes a greater depth of flavor.

The rice roll served by Kafe Vietnam is rather lavish in this mixed platter compared to elsewhere.

The amiable Justin even demonstrate to the novice like us on how to wrap and roll the snacks correctly before letting us to try hands on, of course, you enjoy your own product respectively (=

Not too bad a wrap of mine right? Hehehe......

Warming up our taste buds next is the zesty salad dishes.

GOI GA - Chicken Salad (MYR 13.90)
A plate with a bed of shredded chicken slices, cabbage, onion and herbs.

GOI BO BOP THAU- Beef Salad (MYR 13.90)
For beef meat buffs, here you go, a rendition of this meaty salad.

GOI RAU CAU TOM THIT-  Jelly, Prawn & Pork Salad (MYR 13.90)
Want some seafood companion to your salad instead, there you go! Juicy prawn with a special touch of jelly strips.

BAHN XEO - Vietnamese Pancake (MYR 15.90)
Flavourful pancake of Vietnamese rendition, does reminds of my favourite pajeon (=

PHO BO-  Beef Clear Soup Koay Teow (MYR 14.90)
I must say that this bowl of homey Beef Noodle Soup really gets executed very well. Slurpy noodles are heavenly paired with the tender slices of beef in the tasteful broth that bowled me over for it.

BO KHO -Mild Spicy Beef  & Carrot Stew with Egg Noodles (MYR 14.90)
Very deliciously done with some engaging kick of spicinessE

BUN BO HUE - Hue Slice Beef, Ham with Thick Rice Noodles in Spicy Soup (MYR 14.90)

COM GA XOI MO - Special Fried Rice with Oil Seared Chicken (MYR 13.90)
The fried chicken drumstick was definitely a bliss! Only blanched in hot oil instead of deep fried, hence rendered a  very succulent meat texture with a thin crispy skin without being too oily.

COM THIT KHO TRUNG - Rice with Stewed Pork Belly & Egg (MYR 13.90)
Sharing a close similarity to our Chinese braised pork and egg, this recipe twist from Kafe Vietnam comes much lighter but still remain very delicious and flavourful. The secret lies in the clear soup broth which uses coconut water simmering that certainly will amuse your tummy humbly even with just a bowl of white rice.  This dish is usually eaten to signify the new year back in Vietnam and is fondly known as ‘tet’. Needless to say, the bowl is “swept clean” to the last drop! Yeah, I know it’s kinda unbelievable, hehe………….

COM CA BASA KHO TIEU- Rice with Black Pepper Basa Fish (MYR 14.90)
Sweet and flaky cutlet of fish. Another catfish breed from Vietnam, this fish is exceptionally grainier in texture due to its rich Omega-3 fatty acids content.

CRISPY FRIED OYSTERS (MYR 17.90)
Enjoy this bite-sized nosh. Conveniently popped into mouth, yummmm……

HEN XUC BANH DA- Fried Saffron Lala Meat with Sesame Seed Rice Crackers (MYR 17.90)
My first plate of unconventional fried rice with clams, not too bad an idea.

FRIED BABY SQUID (MYR  14.90)
Chewily pleasing and makes a great snack in a group.

LAU VIT NAU VHOO -Fermented Beancurd Duck Yam (MYR  31.90)
A steamboat of clear broth that has been sweetened through long hours boiling, before got spiced up with juicy duck meat and my favourite yam. Love the mushy bites of yam while boiled :)

Some fruits to clear the palate and to round up the day 'foodfully'!

It was a pretty unique serving of cutely cut watermelon to be eaten with spiced-fried mountain salt, which turns out to be very addictive and nice, surprisingly, wow!

In a nutshell, authentic taste of Vietnamese cuisines are what you could expect over here at Kafe Vietnam, somewhat different from the mainstream chains that might have been too commercialized in accord to the mass evolution in culinary. I personally really enjoy all the fresh herbs used such as the basil leaves which are truly a bliss in enhancing the overall flavour fo the food. All in all, it was a delightful and sumptuous night and much thanks to the hospitality by Justin and his team.

Ngon!
