LWIN LEE | TESTER LABORATORY CAFE & BISTRO @ BANDAR MENJALAR, KEPONG





Once quick glance would have you into thinking that this shop might be some sort of laboratory test clinics. But don’t be astonished that this seemingly chilling place is actually a Western fusion café that embraces the concept of any ordinary science lab that you have seen and experienced since your alma mater. Hmm, interestingly!





Even the interior décor is designed such a way that reflects the common piping in the science lab and rest assured that all drinks served here comes in genuinely imported laboratory equipments, namely beaker, flasks, test tubes and many more! All comes in many sizes and different shapes to chirk you up more.






This unequaled establishment draws inspiration from Paris and Japan, by Ipoh-borned “culinary scientists”, Ms Jun Tham and Evonne who also the café owner. From their sharing, we understood that it’s not a bed of roses when kick starting this concept initially- having to meet the many specific guidelines and strict regulations as it involves the shipment of real laboratory instruments from Germany and also bearing the high cost of the beakers that easily comes at USD 11 each (wow, that’s quite a bit of moolah!). Nevertheless, everything has been ironed out and falls in place eventually, and is now greeting the ‘students’ from near and afar with the many inquisitive tester creations.




TESTER CHEESE PORK CHOP (MYR 15.50)
The cheese oozes out eagerly upon slicing the rolled meat.




Well-marinated pork meat is then tenderized before rolled up together with cheese, and then lightly coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried till golden brown.





LAMB SHANK (MYR 27.90)
Generous slab of Australian lamb, slowly cooked to perfection in both flavor and texture.





FRIED PORK RIBS (MYR 23.90)
The tender meat is prepared using the ‘deep freeze’ method as adopted in the special Japanese technology, rendering the crispy exterior while remaining succulent within.




SPAGHETTI CARBONARA (MYR 15)





TESTER SIGNATURE CHICKEN- SPICY (MYR 14.50)
This is one lip-smacking good choice and personally love it very much, despite left me bit burning on the tongue, hehe (=

The thigh meat is thoroughly seasoned with various ingredients which includes marmite sauce with some asam zest that actually titillates your palate appetizingly, added with some hint of spiciness by the chili too.




TESTER NASI LEMAK 2 WITH FRIED CHICKEN (MYR 10.90)
Gotta agree that am enjoying one of the best fried chicken in town!
The meat is unbelievably awesome with the pleasantly flavoured, crunchy at the outside but juicy within. The best part is, it is not greasy at all! That says pretty much of the experienced chef behind this wondrous dish. Thumbs up!




After all the appealing dishes, it’s time to usher out the noteworthy beverages.

Surprise doesn’t end there yet at this laboratory. It then calls for further hands-on experiment and field work to be done for the next calibration of investigative cocktails.

A playful set of tomato juice, tobasco and vodka






TESTER SCREW DRIVER (MYR 25)
This citrusy mixture consists of orange juice, lemonade and vodka






Or perhaps some coffee or tea for the traditionalists.





COLD DRIP COFFEE (MYR 10)
Served chilled in the cutesy 250ml bottle, using  the blend of South Africa, Ethiopian and Mandheling.





CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW (MYR 14- HOT, MYR16-COLD)




For flowers tea selection, choose from the soothing brew of Peach Tea or Apple Tea at MYR 13 per port each. The peach tea is actually dried and mixed inhouse.





Overall, the ambiance at this ‘lab’ atmosphere is nothing short of comfortable and cozy, with taste buds have been tickled amusingly with the delicious recipes. Buckled up with unparallel innovation in culinary formulation, it’s just a matter of time before curious foodies around started swarming this place soon in anticipation of more unique savoring of their grubs that conceptualize and encourage more of the mix-and-match idea and to be creative, bounded by conventions.
