Pulp
is Papa Palheta's flagship store in Malaysia- an independent coffee boutique from
Singapore. This store resides within the premises of Art Printing Works (APW),
a historical printing plant which still functions since 1965 in Bangsar, Kuala
Lumpur. Pulp supplies coffee equipment and roasted beans both at retail and
commercial level. It is equipped with a cupping room, a service workshop and a
cafe which serves coffee and pastries.
-
Cupping room with tall tables and high seats
-
C platform features all kinds of coffee machines gadget that you can imagine.
-
Third room is meant for workshop conducting purpose- mainly for professional
retailers as it involves heavy machinery and not our usual coffee
appreciation classes :D
Its
sheer dedication towards the legendary roaster of this red cherries as well as
the love for coffee is immensely reflected in the customized nook for Cupping
Room, C-Platform and Coffee Tech Workshop inside the café. Comes 29th March, is their 2nd anniversary (= Indeed a true-blue
one-stop centre for coffee aficionados.
Huge 30 years’ old machine! |
The unique name actually
comes from the legend of Portuguese diplomat Francisco de Melo Palheta who
planted the first coffee bush in Brazil with seeds smuggled from neighbouring
French Guiana in 1727. Palheta was said to have accomplished this act of
cross-border intrigue by seducing the French Guianese governor’s wife-
according to the source from Malay Mail Online.
Food
here was pleasantly toothsome albeit it’s more skewered towards coffee affair.
AVOCADO
+ EGG (MYR 15)
For
lights nibble, go for this bite-sized pleasant ensemble of mashed avocado
served with cherry tomatoes, egg mayo on wheat bread.
BALANCE
BREAKFAST VER 1.0 (MYR 24)
Hearty
plate of balanced breakie consisting of rustic homemade potato rosti, sausages,
sunny side up and salad as a side. We were told that it’s San Francisco
inspired from a Korean merchant. Alright, perhaps some kimchi to make some
appearance soon one of the component here next time, hehe.
MELTDOWN
(MYR 15)
Double
turkey ham slices coasted with melted cheddar cheese. Also optional to have
sandwiched it with Toasted Brioche at MYR 12. Layers of croissant is fluffy
with mild buttery taste- it’s already good on its own. When pairs with a
cup of joe, it's simple perfect!
It
also reminds me of the slightly richer version of Meltdown at The Counter, Pavilion.
Yum!
One
of the pioneer in the menu offerings and still remaining one of the crowds
favourite. Only heats up the croissant upon ordering for just 2 ½ minutes to
ensure that quintessesntial softness.
Hand
brew is calling us now!
SEASONAL
COFFEE
Hartmann
Lot 22 (Panama, Candela) MYR 18
Helmed by Rotibor
Hartmann, a third generation coffee producer, the Hartmann Estate is synonymous
with specialty coffee in Panama. For the Hartmann family, every harvest is an
opportunity to explore, refine and push the boundaries of coffee processing.
This harvest is no
exception- Lot 22is one of the most exciting coffee experiences we have come
across here at Papa Palheta. Owing its unique taste profile to an interesting combination
of sun drying coffee cherries with their pulp and skin intact, and then further
sugar development by removing the skin and some of the mucilage and continuing
to dry on raised drying beds.
Tasting notes: Strawberry, hints of peach, sparkling
red apple acidity in a medium body.
Processing: Hybrid (Natural & Pulped Natural)
Varietal: Caturra, Catuai, Typica
Crop Year: 2016
Method: Aeropress
Coffea Diversa (Costa
Rica, Biolley) MYR 18
Known as a garden of
varietals, Gonzalo Hernandez conceptualizes Coffea Diversa as a collection of
rare and exotic varietals rather than your average, typically structured farm. With
ideal micro-climatic and soils conditions, Gonzalo has realised the potential
of his environment by growing myriad or rare and exotic varietals.
Sudan Rume is widely known
for its quality cup profile, however low yields and small bean have always
hampered its commercial utilization. This micro lot harvest of the Sudan Rume
varietal is one outstanding example of Gonzalo’s persistence and dedication to
his farming philosophies.
Tasting notes: Roasted almonds, malt, sage, juicy
raisins and sweet round finish
Processing: Honey
Varietal: Sudan Rume
Crop Year: 2016
Method: French Press
NITRO
BLACK MATTER
10
hours cold brewed coffee infused with pressurized 100% nitrogen and served
chilled on draught, with composition of Brazil
Ponto Alegre and India Thippanahalli
Estate. Creamy and velvet are the tasteing notes, with cascading texture,
sweet and long malty finish.
COLD BREW (MYR 12)
It’s cold brew is pretty
awesome too- fruity and vivid finishing
So drop by one of these
days soon to increase your knowledge pertaining to these cherries appreciation
if you’re an amateur like me, or exchanging of thoughts of the coffee blends as
one of the community support. Am pretty sure Marcus and the barista would be
more glad than happy to share their part of stories of this trade.
